  • Position Overview:

    Responsible for transportation, embalming and reconstruction of donors in compliance with industry standards and IDN policies and procedures.

    Work on rotating on-call schedule with extended hours.

    Work five, 12-hour weekend shifts per month.

  • Organization Responsibilities:

    Essential Job Functions and Performance Expectations:

    1. Perform the embalming process and reconstruction of donors as assigned.

    a. Perform embalming and reconstruction of donor to achieve minimum embalming feedback score according to benchmark standards.

    b. Document accurately on the IDN embalming report.

    c. Follow Iowa Board of Mortuary Science regulations and IDN policies and procedures.

    2. Transport donors to and from designated establishments.

    a. Copy all requested chart information and retrieve blood specimens upon request.

    b. Confirm donor identification according to IDN policies and procedures.

    3. Perform training with new LFD&E staff, Donor Embalming Assistants and students

    a. Assist in staff and student training and document information on appropriate training checklist immediately following an embalming.

    4. Participate in scheduled meetings and training sessions to maintain proficiency in embalming and reconstruction process.

    a. Attend and actively participate in all LFD&E meetings or training sessions as measured by attendance sheet. Any missed meetings should be made up within one week as communicated by the manager or director.

    Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:

    1. Must receive required vaccines based on outlined schedules to protect our employees, healthcare personnel, donors, recipients, and families we may come into contact. (e.g. Influenza vaccine must be obtained annually by December 1st and COVID vaccine upon required timeline.)

    2. Respond to call/page within 10 minutes and arrive to office within one hour of call or as assigned.

    3. At peak times, may be called in to assist when not scheduled.

    4. Work on rotating on-call schedule with extended hours.

    5. Work five, 12-hour weekend shifts per month.

    6. Lift equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 lbs.

    7. Assist with physical lifting of donors.

    8. Stand for long periods of time in an embalming room environment.

    9. Mental and visual fatigue associated with detailed work.

    10. Use of sharp surgical instruments which may cause damage or injury if used incorrectly.

    11. Exposure to biohazardous materials such as blood, other body fluids, communicable diseases and formaldehyde. Standard/universal precautions and use of personal protective equipment is required.

    12. Travel to the office and donor hospitals through the state of Iowa at any given hour of the day or night.

    13. Drive vehicle under various weather and physical conditions that may lead to visual and mental fatigue.

    14. Stooping, kneeling, reaching, and handling (seizing, holding, grasping, turning or otherwise working with hands).

    15. Express ideas verbally and convey detailed or important spoken information.

    16. Receive detailed information through oral and auditory communication.

    Skills and Abilities:

    1. Maintain a current valid driver’s license and be insurable through IDN’s insurance.

    2. Skill and ability to effectively use computers and computer software including word processing, databases, spreadsheets, Internet tools, and electronic mail.

    3. Effectively communicate both verbally and in writing when representing IDN; work well with others; take and give direction; demonstrate effective problem-solving skills; ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
