  • Position Overview:

    Responsible for carrying out the referral response, evaluation, consent, management and recovery process to maximize donation and transplantation in compliance with industry standards.

  • Job Qualifications:

    Bachelor’s degree in nursing or health related field involving direct patient care, Registered Nurse, Registered Respiratory Therapist. Critical-care or Trauma ER experience required. COVID Vaccination required.

  • Organization Responsibilities:

    Essential Job Functions and Performance Expectations:

    1. Respond to and evaluate hospital referrals for the potential for organ/tissue donation.
      1. Screen all referrals according to established IDN policies and procedures.
      2. Document accurately and in a timely manner in iTransplant.
      3. Maintain effective communication between IDN staff, hospital and all other agencies/professionals involved.
      4. Report any case concerns to Administrator on Call (AOC).
      5. Perform and peer review plasma dilution assessment to assure qualified sample.
    2. Accurately obtain authorization for donation and medical/behavioral history of potential donor.
      1. Utilize Dual Advocacy to allow all potential donor families to make an informed donation decision.
      2. Review authorization and disclosure form with Communication Center staff according to policy and procedure.
      3. Ensure compliance with local medical examiner needs during the recovery process.
      4. Accurately obtain and document medical/behavioral history and authorization/disclosure according to IDN policies.
      5. Work with Organ Donation Manager on process improvements for staff performance to identify and achieve case efficiency.
      6. Complete all case paperwork accurately and timely.
      7. Perform thorough review of medical records; assure EMS run report and current hospitalization information is obtained.
      8. Accurately collect and label all blood for serological testing and HLA tissue samples to assist with transplantation of organs.
    3. Manage potential organ donor to optimize organ function to maximize organ utilization.
      1. Ensure compliance with local medical examiner needs during the recovery process.
      2. Adhere to IDN protocol on the management of the organ donor.
      3. Collaborate with the medical director and intensivist to manage the organ donor.
    4. Allocate organs for transplant following industry standards and established policies and procedures.
      1. Adhere to OPTN policies in the allocation of organs.
      2. Communicate and interact with transplant surgeons to provide information to pertinent to organ suitability and allocation.
    5. Assist with recovery and presentation of organs during the organ recovery surgery in collaboration with surgeons, IDN recovery staff and hospital staff to maximize organ viability.
      1. Coordinate and assist with transportation of recovery teams in a timely manner.
      2. Prepare recovery equipment for the perfusion and storage of solid organs.
      3. Prepare preservation equipment for the perfusion and/or storage of kidney(s).
      4. Assist with preservation of kidney(s) during cannulation process.
      5. Monitor kidney(s) on the preservation equipment until transplant.
      6. Accurately label and package according to OPTN and IDN policies.
    1. Respond to and evaluate import organ offers.
    2. Assist local transplant teams with recovery of organs at donor hospitals throughout the United States.
    3. Perform training with new staff or staff learning additional job functions.
      1. Assist in the training of staff and document the information on the training checklist immediately following the case.
    4. Assist with quality assurance process completing charts and QA requests in a timely manner.
      1. Complete assigned charts within five (5) business days
      2. Complete QA requests within five (5) business days.
    5. Participate in scheduled bimonthly meetings and training sessions to maintain proficiency in organ recovery process.
    6. Attend and actively participate in all organ staff meetings or training sessions as measured by attendance sheet pending activity. Any missed meetings should be made up within one week of meeting.
    7. Attend clinical competencies annually.
      1. Demonstrate competency in essential job functions.

    Additional Job Functions:

    1. Assist in maintenance of the Medical Workroom and facilities.
      1. Communicate with manager when supplies or instruments are low.
    2. Conduct public education presentations as requested.
    3. Organ department related projects as assigned, i.e. active member of IDN committees, surgeon QA, prepare reports for transplant centers.

    Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:

    1. Respond to call within 10 minutes and depart for hospital or office within one hour of call or as assigned.
    2. At peak times, may be called in to assist when not scheduled.
    3. Work a rotating on-call schedule with extended hours, minimum 12 days of call per month. May be required to take additional call as needed.
    4. Lift equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 lbs.
    5. Required to assist with transferring donors.
    6. Follow sterile technique guidelines.
    7. Possible mental and visual fatigue associated with detailed work.
    8. Work in conditions inherent to an ICU or operating room environment where there are exposures to biohazardous materials such as blood, other body fluids, communicable diseases and pharmacological agents. Universal precautions and use of personal protective equipment is required.
    9. Travel to the office and donor hospitals throughout the State of Iowa at any given hour of the day or night.
    10. Travel to donor hospitals through the United States via chartered aircraft at any given hour of the day or night.
    11. Driving vehicle under various conditions that may lead to visual and mental fatigue.
    12. Work requires stooping, kneeling, reaching and handling (seizing, holding, grasping, turning or otherwise working with hands).
    13. Express ideas verbally and convey detailed or important spoken information.
    14. Receive detailed information through oral and auditory communication.

    Skills and Abilities:

    1. Maintain a current valid driver’s license and be insurable through IDN’s insurance.
    2. Skill and ability to effectively use computers and computer software including word processing, databases, spreadsheets, Internet tools, and electronic mail.
    3. Effectively communicate both verbally and in writing when representing IDN; work well with others; take and give direction; demonstrate effective problem solving skills; ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
